Offshore Investment Guide

Hi ,

Our team of advisers has asset protection specialists from London, Geneva and New York. The Britsh expert manages SIPP and QROPS assets for UK pensioners, and one American is a reknowned U.S. tax attorney with an estate planning practice focused on Americans living overseas and non-resident aliens looking to invest in the U.S.

A colleague from Hong Kong was attending a workshop there recently, wrote to tell me that the market for helping Expat Brits with pensions, is said to he a £500B global business. In the U.S. - Bank of America has informed non-resident customers without onshore mailing addresses, that they must withdraw their funds and close those accounts. The Foreign Account Tax Compliance Act (FATCA) is causing angst for asset managers, everywhere, onshore and offshore.

We are at your service to resolve FBAR or PFIC issues, related to FACTA. In addition, as new acroynm's are invented, we'll be the first offshore adviser team to discover legal solutions (smile).

American Expats Standing Up Against Unfair Treatment from FATCA

from the: Americans in Switzerland Working Group

Recently, a Switzerland-based group of expatriate Americans who calls themselves the Americans in Switzerland Working Group or AMiSWG took action to make FATCA and FBARs an election issue.

Through a series of 5 'Town Hall Meetings' conducted mid-February to early May of this year, discussions surrounding the Government policies that's negatively affecting the millions of US citizens abroad were openly shared.

The report based on the discussion highlighted some of the problems and quoted are:

  • Banks are refusing to have clients who are US citizens
  • Employers are refusing to consider US citizens for jobs overseas
  • Individuals are facing problems investing in US securities
  • Stress in bi-national marriages because the non-American partner is reluctant to share joint account information with the US IRS
Additionally, 'accidental Americans' born at birth but are living abroad are finding that they too have to file income tax with the IRS.

This has caused many to turn towards renouncing their citizenship. While renunciation has declined, the media however are focusing on the rich who are making more than 2 million such as Eduardo Saverin, for instance, who is the co-founder of Facebook.

Through the Ex-patriot Act, the move basically bites you back in the behind.

Overall, the issues presented inside the report were globally shared among Americans worldwide. According to the Association of Americans Resident Overseas, there is an estimated 6.32 million Americans living abroad already and with the report sent to every member of Congress, it shed light into what is really happening overseas.

The initiative included support with leaders from organizations such as the:

  • American Citizens Abroad
  • Overseas American Academy
  • Swiss branches of both Democratic and Republican parties of the US
  • Personnel from the US Embassy
Conducted in Geneva, Bern, Lausanne, Basel and Zurich, the summary of the discussions collectively suggested solutions to allow Americans oversea to become more directly involved with the decision-making processes in Washington.

If you're an American expat in need of help, our advisor in resident will be able to assist you through your difficult time assisting you with compliance, investments and FACTA issues. Free no-obligation consultation, available upon request.
